MEDIA RELEASE: THIEVES TARGETING BRASS FITTINGS

JULY 12, 2010 - Windsor, Ontario

Windsor Police are investigating a rash of thefts in the downtown area involving brass fittings from fire hoses. During the past six months, well over 125 brass fittings have been stolen from apartment buildings located throughout the downtown area. The thefts are taking place during the afternoon and night time hours.

The brass fittings are the connectors that bind the hose to the water supply. The suspects are cutting the fire hose in order to remove the fittings thus rendering the fire hose inoperable, putting every occupant in the building at risk. If the Windsor Fire Department should respond to a fire call at an apartment building where the theft has occurred their ability to effectively perform their job will be compromised. The fittings are most likely being removed for their value as scrap metal and are very costly for the property owners to replace.

Anyone with any information about these thefts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 519-255-TIPS (8477) or Windsor Police Investigations at 519-255-6700 ext 4830.

MEDIA ADVISORY - St. Clair College and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) gift to CHC.

Media Advisory: May 4, 2010
Attention: Local News, New Energy, New Technology Assignment Editors

St. Clair College and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) reveal prototype âGreen roofâ Shed

Linking education programs, products and professions in the City of Windsor.

Windsor, May 5, 2010 â Windsor Essex CHC gratefully received the gift of a prototype green roof shed with a small but committed community build today, involving staff from CHC, CMHC and students from the Architectural, Civil and Construction Technologies Programs at St. Clair College. Jim Steele, CEO of CHC thanked the first year students of the St. Clair College program which designed and built the shed, with its unique roof line. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation linked CHC with St. Clair College allowing the eco shed to find its home among the Windsor 5 Now House TM project.

The eco-friendly outdoor shed was pre-constructed by students in the program which focuses on the principles of green construction. The design, build and prototype of the green shed were undertaken by the first year students in the program. Robert Lanoue, Professor at St. Clair College agrees, âconstruction trades should be looking to new eco-friendly materials and the use of those materials in construction trades. Windsor and the local region are becoming more focused on the changing trends and innovations occurring in the industry and managing for sustainability.â

St. Clair College continually researches and develops new programs to meet the needs of students in the community. In the fall of 2010 the Engineering Technologies Department at St. Clair College introduces Energy Systems Design Technology program. It is the first of its kind to be offered in Ontario. âGraduates can pursue numerous careers paths in the field of energy conversion and design of energy systems for buildings, industrial processes and transportationâ, explains Bill White, Professor and Coordinator. The program prepares students for employment in the sustainable energy field and energy utilization careers, with a focus on energy systems for residential, industrial and commercial applications.

Chair of the Collegeâs School of Engineering Technology Department, Waseem Habash, explained the new programs compliment the existing programs in the School of Engineering including Power Engineering and Construction Engineering Technologies which provide qualifications in 2 years for those looking for a second career.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation coordinated the introduction of the St. Clair College gift to CHC. âBuilding community partnerships is important for CMHC a s well as supporting new technologies in the community. Connecting the dots and joining programs, products and professions is a priority for CMHC.â says Judith Binder, District Manager,Southwestern Ontario, CMHC.

Seniors Be Alert to Phone Scam in Windsor and Essex County

2010-01-12 06:52:47
Windsor Police want you to know about an on-going scam in the city. It's called the 'grand parent scam'. Seniors get a call from a con artist claiming to be a grand child in trouble and in need of bail money. Scammers are also contacting potential victims in the U.S. Seniors are being warned about unsolicited phone calls asking for money.
Police are telling members of the public to be wary of calls urgently asking them to transfer money electronically.

"Verify who you are speaking to is a relative and not a con-artist," RCMP said in a news release. "A simple phone call to a real family member could prevent you from becoming a victim in this scam."

For more information about this phone scam, and others, see www.phonebusters.com.

FOR RELEASE – TUESDAY OCTOBER 27, 2009

ATTENTION: News, Energy, Homes, and Realty/Assignment Editors

Windsor Essex Community Housing Opens Near Zero Energy Home

(WINDSOR) October 27, 2009- Taking a significant step forward in energy-efficient and environmentally responsible housing, Windsor Essex Community Housing Corporation and The Now House Project today opened the Now House Windsor 5. Five post-war bungalows in the Bridgeview North community have undergone deep energy retrofits to reduce energy bills, save carbon and create homes that are warm and environmentally healthy to live in. With the help of solar panels, two of the five houses are expected to have an annual energy cost of zero.

One of the five homes was open for viewing today and visitors were given the opportunity to see energy improvements from spray foam insulation on basement walls to a hydronic heating system that uses solar energy to produce heat and hot water for the home. A game for kids tests their watt IQ and history buffs and builders could watch a movie about how wartime houses were built in a matter of hours. Open houses will be scheduled over the next several months with the next one on Saturday, October 31, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We are committed to working with tenants and community partners to make our portfolio greener,” said Jim Steele, CEO Windsor Essex CHC. “The Now House Windsor 5 project gives us valuable experience with implementing energy conservation measures on our existing single-family homes. We are testing five different approaches and plan to use what we learn on future projects and share what we’ve done with the community through open houses like the one today.”

“Energy use in the residential sector has steadily increased over the past two decades,” said Lorraine Gauthier, President, The Now House Project. “For the sake of the planet and future generations we have to stop that trend. The energy improvements we’ve made to these five houses shows that it can be done even on older houses.”

The Now House Windsor 5 was carried out with the help of numerous Windsor trades and builders, local suppliers and manufacturers including: Meloche Windows and Doors, Rainbow Painting and Decorating, ProTrade Mechanical, BASF Canada, Spray Systems, Tiger Foam Canada and Advanced Solar Solutions.

The project had generous support from sponsors such as the Ontario Power Authority, Whirlpool Canada and JamesHardie.

CHC is a Member of the Ontario Non-profit Housing Association. ONPHA members own and manage more than 150,000 non-profit housing units across Ontario. There are ONPHA members in each of the 47 municipal Service Manager areas established to administer social housing. ONPHA members provide housing for approximately 350,000 people in over 200 communities in Ontario.

Federal Finance Minister, Jim Flaherty, tabled the federal budget in the House of Commons on Tuesday, January 27th. Spending on social housing forms an important part of the budget.

Excerpts of the response from ONPHA follow. You may also download the PDF directly.

FEDERAL CONSERVATIVES PUT LOTS OF CASH ON THE TABLE FOR SOCIAL HOUSING
WILL ONTARIO PROVIDE ITS SHARE OF MATCHING FUNDS?
The federal government yesterday tabled what they hope to be a budget to stimulate Canada’s ailing
economy, on the one hand, and a stay of execution from being overthrown by a coalition of opposition
parties, on the other. Either way, with the tabling of the budget, social housing is playing a dominant
role as it now forms part of this new budget and the coalition’s agenda should the budget be defeated.
Included in the budget are the following for social housing:
• $1 billion over 2 years for renovations and energy retrofits for up to 200,000 social housing units
• $400 million over 2 years for new low‐income seniors units
• $75 million over 2 years for new supportive housing for people with disabilities
The above is on top of the announcement made by the government during the election campaign (and
recently confirmed) of $1.9 billion to extend the Affordable Housing Initiative (AHI), the Homelessness
Partnership Initiative (HPI) and the Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP).
Included as well is up to $2 billion over 2 years in direct, low‐cost loans to municipalities for housingrelated
infrastructure projects such as sewers, water lines, and neighbourhood regeneration.
“This is quite positive news for the social housing sector and will hopefully attain the government’s goals
of stimulating spending and creating jobs,” said Hugh Lawson, President of ONPHA. “It also appears
that the mindset of the federal Conservatives about social housing has changed. If so, this is a good step
to them taking ownership of their national role.”
But while this would all seem to be good news, much of what happens next rests on three key milestones
– passage of the budget by the opposition parties, Ontario providing matching money and cutting
through red tape that would otherwise stall the flow of cash to community groups.
“We’ve only seen part one so far,” said Sharad Kerur, ONPHA’s Executive Director. “We’re confident
that the budget will pass so the key question will be whether Ontario’s Finance Minister, Dwight Duncan,
will come through with the matching funds in the upcoming provincial budget.”
To date ONPHA continues to work on several initiatives in collaboration with the Co‐operative Housing
Federation of Canada (CHFC), the Social Housing Services Corp. (SHSC) and the Service Manager
Housing Network related to the affordable housing program, asset management and capital financing
that will assist non‐profit housing providers to take advantage of

SHSC Responds to Federal Budget 2009

CHC as the largest social housing provider in Windsor and Essex County, supports the SHSC . Social Housing Services Corporation is a non-profit corporation led by social housing representatives who are committed to providing Ontario’s social housing providers and municipal service managers with programs that add significant value to their operations.

The following is a summary of SHSC's response to the 2009 Budget Announcement.

January 27, 2009
SHSC Responds to the Federal Budget Announcement

SHSC is encouraged by the social housing funding announced today in the 2009 Federal Budget. We are particularly pleased to see that the funds will focus on energy retrofits and the emerging green economy. Such an investment will stimulate the nation’s economy, create green collar jobs and provide much-needed capital repair for social housing in Ontario – home to 250,000 families and individuals, representing around 600,000 residents, with property and building assets valued at nearly $40 billion.

SHSC is encouraged to see the federal government back in the business of social housing, recognizing that it is not a sector that can thrive without investments from all levels of government. We sincerely hope that this announcement is not just a one-time infusion of desperately-needed funds, but is part of a larger commitment to meeting the needs of communities across the country.

This money will certainly go a long way to addressing some of the growing capital issues that housing providers and municipalities face, but it also brings an opportunity to expedite more effective relationships with our partners in government. At the same time we recognize that Ontario represents the largest portion of social housing in Canada and we hope that funding distribution considers this disparity (see Ontario Social Housing by the Numbers below).

SHSC would like to see a program designed to move quickly. Social housing in Ontario has many ‘shovel-ready’ projects – program requirements and funding criteria must be easily understood and it must not be cumbersome for our housing partners to administer. For any funding program to be a success, it must meet the needs and realities of social housing landlords, municipalities and tenants.

SHSC has championed the values and goals of the entire social housing sector – co-operatives, non-profits, municipalities and residents – and has focused attention on their needs with research, training and with tools and programs aimed at energy conservation.

In our recent letter to the Minister of Finance, The Honourable James Flaherty, and the Minister of Transportation, Infrastructure and Communities, The Honourable John Baird, SHSC implored the federal government to commit to a multi-year investment in social housing through a housing trust, social housing energy retrofits, and a decent homes standard.

Ontario Social Housing by the Numbers:

Ontario has:

38% of Canada’s population
40% of Canada’s core need households*
43% of Canada’s social housing stock
Oldest housing stock in Canada

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Core Need is defined as

Adequacy (state of repair, inhabitability)
Affordability (30% of income or less)
Suitability (size of unit fits household size)

Media Release - Bridges Out Of Poverty Workshop

Windsor and Essex County Professionals seek to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and strengths of people living in poverty.

Windsor, ON - The Homeless Coalition of Windsor Essex County and Windsor Essex Community Housing Corporation (CHC) have partnered to bring a one day workshop on November 26, 2008 to educate service providers on the powerful hidden rules that govern behavior and interactions within different economic classes. The Homeless Coalition is able to partner on this workshop due to the funds received through the Homelessness Partnering Strategy administered by the City of Windsor.

One of the purposes of this funding is to increase community awareness of homelessness in Windsor Essex County. Accordingly, the “Bridges out of Poverty” workshop is designed to provide a deeper understanding of the challenges and strengths of people living in poverty. It will provide service provider’s with specific strategies to partner with people in low income situations to create opportunities for success.

The workshop will be attended by professionals and community leaders from throughout Windsor Essex County who work in the social services, healthcare, behavioural healthcare, government and criminal justice fields.

The workshop is based on the book “Bridges out of Poverty” by Dr. Ruby K. Payne who is highly regarded for her work on the hidden rules of class. Throughout the workshop those in attendance will examine the impact of poverty on families, identify ways to improve relationships and develop new tools to better address individuals’ needs.

In recent months a proposed regional plan to reduce poverty through a “Pathway to Potential” strategy has been discussed focusing on the unique issues presented in Windsor and Essex County. Jim Steele, CEO of CHC says “the economic crunch in the area has increased the need for affordable housing and social services. We recognize the need to continue to educate ourselves so we can achieve tangible results and be part of the solution for poverty reduction in our area.”

Now House (TM) Windsor 5 Project Launch - Nov 1, 2008

On Saturday, November 1st, Jim Steele, CEO of CHC will announce the launch of the Now House Windsor 5 project at a community event in Bridgeview. ( 1 - 3 PM Tilston Park)

The Now House Windsor 5 project will retrofit five wartime style homes in the Bridgeview community to a near zero energy use. George Robson - Director of Asset Management; Bill Toth - District 2 Manager; and Rob Sharon - Chief Operating Officer will work with a team from Now House (TM) to design a least cost, highest energy reduction model for these houses in our portfolio. It is hoped the experiences we gain in this project may be potentially applied to the other 125 wartime houses in our portfolio.

Now House™ is one of 12 winning demonstration projects in Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s (CMHC) EQuilibrium Sustainable Housing Demonstration Initiative, and the only project among the winners focused on the renovation and retrofit of existing houses. Now House proves you can take a 60-year-old wartime home and improve it well beyond standards currently required of new buildings.

Utility costs for the houses in the CHC portfolio continue to rise and, we as a corporation must look to innovative and cost effective means to sustain our housing. The focus of the Now House Windsor 5 project is to greatly reduce energy required by these homes and bring those energy costs way down.

CHC will benefit from the Windsor 5 Homes Project by reducing our operating costs and serving as a demonstration project for homeowners and contractors in Windsor to show ways to improve the energy efficiency of older homes.

The project will begin in November and tendering to local builders is scheduled for spring 2009.
